Boat, Menjangan There are soft corals everywhere off Menjangan One cannot miss anemonefish when
diving Menjangan
Batfish off Menjangan like the company of divers and other big creatures, e.g. turtels

Menjangan is the most famous diving destination in the Western part of Bali. Menjangan is an island which belongs to the West Bali National Park. The National Park has a size of 19000 hectares. It includes rainforest, Savanna and pristine coral reefs. Menjangan was famous for its deers. Actually Menjangan means deer in Javanese. And there are still deers on the island who come to the beach to beg divers or snorklers for
some fresh water or a little bit of food. A diving day off Menjangan starts in Labuhan Lalan, a small port on the Balinese mainland where divers board small local wooden vessels which belong to the National park authority.
After the three hours drive from Sanur or Kuta, it is nice to have a coffee break in Labuhan Lalan while the boat crew loads tanks and other diving equipment on the boat.
I love the boat ride over to Menjangan. In the distance one can see the volcanoes on Java and sometimes dolphins break the surface of the ocean with their back fins.
The ride takes between 30 minutes to an hour depending on which site you want to start diving.

Menjangan is generally calm diving. There are no strong currents. Only waves can sometimes be a bit disturbing and make diving, mostly the boat ride a little bit uncomfortable when a diver is on the surface.

A main feature when diving Menjangan is one will see of lot of gorgonians on steep walls. Gorgonians need relatively calm conditions and nutrients. If nutrients are avaible there will also be a lot of fish.

You will probably not find a lot of big sharks here, not many sunfish. But whale sharks have been seen off Menjangan and I regularly see white tip reef sharks.

If you like deep diving (about 40 meters) kapal budak (slave ship), an old wreck, might be the right dive site for you. It has a very interesting atmosphere, a little bit spooky. There are a lot of red glooming bait fish and some groupers as their predators living in the remains of the wreck.
